*Original activity book designed by Fire Chief Paul Rushton
The original layout was irregular, with low-res images sourced online, it used an impractical bleed along the bottom edge of the pages.

Our group's mission was to make a visually stunning, consistent and more cost-efficient design, creating an intentional design that also included more interactive activities.
ASSESSMENT: THE ORIGINAL DESIGN

THE PROCESS
Brainstorming and Research
After meeting the client and discussing the informational requirements in the booklet, the team came up with new possibilities and activities for the kids to retain the information better, and make Paul's educational visits more memorable.

Throughout a couple meetings, we collected inspiration and options for the stylization of the illustrations, layout and typography.

After settling on a consistent style, we assigned each designer the spreads and tasks needed to complete the full booklet. Given my experience with illustration, I was assigned the Fire is NOT a Toy spreads, since they were heavily illustrated and required plenty of detailed props.

FINAL DESIGN

Print interactive version
After 6 weeks of client and peer reviews, and meeting with the City of Burnaby print shop experts, the final print-ready piece resulted in a friendly, clear and interactive illustration

Digital web version
After seeing the results, The City of Burnaby urged our team to make a web-friendly version, to serve the community outside of the classrooms, so we made a full color version of the booklet.
